Wicks! Most consumers usually think of a candle's shape, color or fragrance as its most important element. Most candle manufacturers, though, would probably say it's the wick that makes the candle. The purpose of a wick is to deliver fuel (wax) to the flame. Acting like a fuel pump, the wick draws the liquefied wax up into the flame to burn. Different wick sizes allow for different amounts of fuel to drawn into the flame. Too much fuel and the flame will flare and soot; too little fuel and the flame will sputter out.

It will show every step in the tapers frame-making process. These pictures were taken just to show a close up view of the frames so you could try to make them if you want to. They are not complete instructions. You will have to modify them any way you wish. I found the plans originally in an old book on beekeeping. Some general woodworking skills are needed.

Without the precious flame to extend the daylight hours well into the night and to illuminate the halls of humanity, doctrines might not have been written, physicists on the brink of discovery might have befuddled their formulas in the dark and entertainment would have stopped at sunset. Evidence of candles, or a similar illuminating devices like torches and fire baskets, dates back to as early as 3000 BC.
