IMPORTANT MILESTONES IN BEEKEEPING HISTORY
1900 - 2000+

   

1900 - A continuous sheet of wax foundation with uniform thickness became available after E. B. Weed of New York developed imprinting rollers.

1920 - Hetherington"s wired foundation is greatly improved by Root and Dadant as Weed's thinner foundation often failed in their extractors.

1919 - Karl van Frisch of Germany studied honey bees for 59 years culminating in receiving the Nobel Prize for his work on the "Bee Dance" and the analysis of bee behavior.
   
1959 - Brother Adam, who was a monk at the Buckfast Abbey in England, is know as the man in search of the perfect bee. In 1950, he set out to collect queens for bee research by seeking out isolated pure strains. Brother Adam is best know for the development of the "Buckfast" strain of bees. 1960's - Walter Rothenbuhler, who was widely recognized as a leading authority in the field of honey bee genetics, was the first to establish a genetic basis for behavior. He is often considered to have laid the foundation for the current science of behavioral genetics. His research also resulted in the development of effective breeding techniques for the management of disease resistance in honey bees.

How do you substitute honey for sugar?

To use honey in any of your favorite baked goods, follow these tips:

Honey is one and a half times sweeter than sugar, so start by replacing up to half the sugar called for with honey. 

For every cup of honey, reduce the total liquid in the recipe by ¼ cup.

Because honey is acidic, add 1 tsp of baking soda for each cup of honey used.
