Our Visit to Georgia Winery - Nov,2006

Georgia Wines

(Text from Georgia Winery Website)
We at Georgia Wines are often asked "Why do your wines taste so good... What's your secret?"
As the first established farm winery in the state of Georgia, we have been making premium award winning wines since 1983. Our "secret" lies in the fact that we strive for maximum flavor content in our winemaking by practicing our own "freeze-fermentation" technique. We FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS on maximum fruitiness in our wines.

In the spring of 1982 our founder, Dr. Maurice S. Rawlings, Sr., bought a serenely beautiful 52 acre tract of land in the foothills of Lookout Mountain in the Northwest corner of Georgia. Looking for a way to make the land productive, he contacted the local Agricultural Extension Service. To his dismay, he discovered that the land was unsuitable for farming, but was thrilled to find that a vineyard would be a preferred alternative. Dr. Rawlings had always held a passion for fine wines. He and his family planted the vineyard and the rest is "history".

Comments on their Winery & Wines

The muscadine grapes really find their mark in making a fruity, sweeter wine and many of the Georgia wines reflected that.

Their muscadine wines are fabulous. We tasted many, among them the "Georgia On My Mind" really was special.

Besides being experts ln making muscadine wine, we found many Northern grapes that we are very familiar with.

They made many wines using combinations of Concord and DeChaunac. They made a dry DeChaunac ("Napoleon") that was better than any other Northern DeChaunac that I have tasted. (Lots of oak!)

They also used Niagara and Cayuga in various blends.

Here are some newly established vines and trellis in a new area they were going to use to host weddings.
They also sell winemaking equipment in their sales area.
There winery was full of large tanks and cases of wine.
They sold these small spice bags to make a "Hot Spiced Wine." Click here for more about these spice bags.
