Making at Honeyflow Farm
Candle making at Honeyflow Farm is normally
done during January & February. Since we are not open
at that time, I have included some pictures of this activity.
Beeswax candles are started by stringing
a frame with candle wicking. Each frame starts by holding
6 pairs of candles. The frames are dipped into 175 degrees
beeswax, cooled, and then the procedure is repeated. After
the candle is about 1/2 size, the frame is split apart into
two frames. The dipping procedure is continued until the candle
is finished.
Shown here are 30 pairs of 12 inch tapers
cooling, soon they will be packed into plastic bags &
ready to be shipped.
Hand-dipped tapers are available in pairs
only in 6 1/2, 9 1/2 & 12 inch lengths and are sold
at our vinyard sales stand during Fall season and all year
round through our Candle
Catalog.
Volume discounts on our hand-dipped candles
are available through our Candle
Catalog. Notice the "bloom" (the dusty looking
substance on the candles), this means that the candles are
made of pure beeswax. This bloom appears on beeswax
candles after they have been aged for a period of time. Although
it can easily be wiped off with a cloth, many people like
the look as it gives the candle an antique appearance.
These molded 10 inch hexagonal dinner candles
are made using special molds. They
are sold in pairs.
Votives are made with metal molds (shown
in the upper right) These are1 1/2 tall, 10 hr votives, and
they are packaged in packs of 6 in 7 different scents. They
are one of our most popular items.
After the various molds are filled with wax
and cooled, they still need to be trimmed by hand. We
usually pour candles for a few days and then clean and package
them for the next few days. Each candle is handled individually
and is unique from all others.
More candles ready for cleaning and trimming.
These are some of our cylinder candles.
They are 3 inchs wide and either 3, 6 1/2 or 9 1/2 inchs tall.
They are made with a heavy square braided wick which is necessary
with the rich beeswax.
This last pillar is a hexagonal shaped, 2
wick candle (almost 4 pounds of beeswax!). It is one of
our largest candles and will burn a long time! |
