New York Muscat

(Muscat Hamburg x Ontario). From Cornell University's Geneva, New York experiment station.

This grape is always in the top three in tastings. The oval reddish-blue grapes have the best muscat flavor of any hybrid I have tried. Only pure vinifera muscats like Early Muscat or Muscat Hamburg are better in flavor, but they aren't as hardy as NY Muscat.

The vine has less vigor such that where Concord would be planted eight feet apart, NY Muscat could easilly be planted six feet apart in the rows. Productivity is also lighter than many varieties. Even so, the flavor is worth it.

Also used for sweet muscat wines in the eastern US. My vines do well trained to cordons and pruned to two or three bud spurs. Needs good soil fertility, too.

Variety Notes

More Info

  • Variety: New York Muscat
  • Color: Reddish-Blue
  • Hardiness: Medium
  • Growing Season: 155
  • Uses: Table or dessert use.
  • Remarks: Medium-loose clusters of medium-size berries. Vine moderately vigorous. Soil drainage very important.

Where are the NY Muscat vines
located in the vineyard?

Seneca Sign

  • Rows 10 & 50

Each row has about 50 vines.

Rows 10 was part of the original vineyard planted in 1983.

Row 50 was added as the vineyard grew. NY Muscat is not a strong grower in our vineyard and there are some vines missing in the rows. I plan to start planting some Muscat with a grafted rootstock next year for more vigor.

NY Muscat is my favorite grape for jelly and I love the taste.

Where can I Purchase NY Muscat Wine & Vines?

Red Wine

I have never seen NY Muscat wine sold in stores. I think we are going to have to make it ourselves.

It may be included (but not on the label) of many wines that have a fruity, sweeter finish.

These style of wines may be purchased on line from:

Due to regulations wine cannot be shipped into Michigan from other states. Stop by these wineries to purchase this style of wine.

(Note - If any other winery carries this style of wine and wants to be included here, please let us know)

We do not sell wine or vines. Please go to our resource page for a listing of nurseries.
