We had over 20 people show up this year for
spring pruning. Most
of our pruners are high school youths on Spring Vacation. Vines
were pruned, tied, new vines planted, trunks were removed and
lots of clean-up completed.
A few days were on the cold side (snow on the ground), but it melted
quickly.
One whole row of vines was removed and replanted with
Vignoles, a white wine grape. These pictures show the
trunks being cut away and the new vines are in the blue grow
tubes. Because we grow more than 20 varieties of grapes we make
lots of changes.
The vines made excellent
growth last year and went into winter very healthy. The
winter was very mild and since we did not have much winter damage
we have the potential for a very large crop.
The previous two growing seasons had lots
of problems and many trunks were damaged. This year
most all of them were replaced and we had a huge number of
dead trunks cut off and dragged out into the burn pile. These
vines had 2 or 3 new canes pruned and tied up to the wire and
will have a normal crop this year this year.
