It has been a very unique situation for the choir each week to receive the latest section of a work in progress. Earlier in the season we asked Louis if the piece was completed yet and were told, the last few sections are still in my noodle. We were working with handwritten scores until one of our members transferred the music to a computer so it could be printed in standard music form. Even as we rehearsed it some fine tuning was being done to the music. The choir has really grown to love the melodies and choral lines in the piece and is now ready to perform the completed Christmas Gloria as the centerpiece of our 2001 Christmas Concerts.

Schubert died at the age of thirty-one, accomplishing much in his short lifetime. One of his last wishes was to be buried near the composer he had most admired: Ludwig van Beethoven. The similarities of their lives are easy to see. Both struggled in many ways to create and both expressed in their music qualities that we identify with both the Classical and Romantic style.
Schubert was the son of a middle-class school teacher who expected that his son would follow in his career. Franz's musical gift was recognized early and as a boy he sang in the Imperial Court. As a young man, however, he followed the wishes of his father and accepted a teaching post. His musical activities continued in his spare time and he surrounded himself with educated and like-minded members of the middle class. Here he found an immediate outlet for his music.
By 1818, he resigned his teaching duties and turned to full-time composition. He continued to have the support of his friends, even while his success with publishers was limited. Before long, Schubert had another battle to fight -- illness. As early as 1822 the debilitating effects of syphilis began to take their toll and, along with his health, his financial condition declined. Nonetheless, he continued to compose to the end, producing some of his most profoundly beautiful music in his final years. Many of his works were rediscovered and accepted only after his death.Mass in G was composed by Franz Schubert in six days at the age of 18.

KYRIE
Lord, have mercy upon us, Christ, have mercy upon us, Lord, have mercy upon us.II. GLORIA
Glory be to God on high, and on earth, peace to men of good will, We praise thee, we bless thee, we adore thee, we glorify thee, We give thanks to thee for thy great glory, Lord God, heavenly king, Father almighty, Lord the only-begotten son, Jesus Christ, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, Who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us, receive our prayer, Who sitteth at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us, For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Ghost in the glory of God the Father. Amen.III. CREDO
I believe in one God, Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible, And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God of God, light of light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made, Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven. And became incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary and was made man, And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, suffered and was buried, And the third day he rose again, according to the scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father, and he shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Ghost, the lord and life-giver, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is adored and glorified, who spake by the prophets, And in one holy catholic and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one baptism and the remission of sins, And I expect the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come, Amen.IV. SANCTUS ET BENEDICTUS
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
V. AGNUS DEI

Christmas Oratorio by Camille Saint-Saens
Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921), French composer, pianist, and organist, born in Paris, made his debut as a pianist at the age of ten and later studied organ and harmony at the Paris Conservatoire. His music, which is written in the classical French tradition, is elegant and precise in detail and form.
Christmas Oratorio by Camille Saint-Saens:
I. Organ Prelude
II. Chorus: There were shepherds at night in that same country, abiding in the fields, and
silently keeping their watch by night over the sleeping flocks around them. And lo! and angel of the Lord appeared, standing there beside them: And the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid at his coming.
And unto them the angel said: Fear not, oh ye shepherd, fear not oh ye shepherds! For, behold I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born today a Saviour Christ, the Lord, in the city of David. And this shall the sign be: ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger low.
And suddenly there was with the angel a great multitude of the heav’nly host praising God, praising God, and saying: (Gloria in altissimis Deo) Glory be unto God in the highest! (et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis) And on earth peace; peace, be on earth, good will unto all men!
III. Air: Patiently, patiently have I waited for the Lord. And lo! he heard my cry.
IV. Air and Chorus: In my heart I believe, O Lord, that thou indeed art Christ, Son of the living God. (Qui in hunc mundum venistis.) He who was to come into this world. (Ergo credidi) I believe, O Lord, thou art indeed Christ, Son of the living God. (Qui in hunc mundum venisti) He who was to come into this world.
V. Benedictus: Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord. God the Lord of Light, he hath shin’d upon us. Thou alone my God art: and all my trust is in thee. Oh Lord! thou art my God. I will exalt thee. Oh Lord! thou art my God, my God thou art, I will exalt thee, and praise thy name.
VI. Chorus: (Quare fremuerunt gentes?) Wherefore do the heathen clamor? (Et populi meditati sunt inania?) Why do the nations imagine vain and foolish things?
(Gloria Patri, gloria Filio, gloria Spiritui Sancto; sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula, saeculorum.) Glory unto the Father, and unto the Son, and Holy Spirit! As is was in the beginning, is and ever shall be, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
VII. My soul doth magnify the Lord, my spirit hat rejoiced in God. For mine eyes have seen Thy glory.
VIII. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Ye heav’ns sing praises, be joyful of earth. For the Lord hath pour’d his consolation upon his people, and He to His afflicted will be merciful. Alleluia, Alleluia, Ye heav’ns, sing praises. For the Lord hath comforted his people and He to all that are afflicted will be merciful. Alleluia, Alleluia!
IX. Arise now, Daughter of Zion! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Praise God, praise God in the night! Praise Him in the first watches of the night time. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. ....... That Zion’s true glory might be manifested, that her Saviour might rise and shine before the nations. Alleluia.
X. Praise ye the Lord of hosts, Sing his salvation, bless His name, show forth his praise in His holy house! Rejoice, ye heav’ns, and be joyful, on earth, for He cometh. Alleluia, Alleluia. ..... Rejoice, ye angels, rejoice, all ye nations, for He cometh. Alleluia, Alleluia.
