February
in the Candle Shop - Wicks, Wax & How we Produce our Candles!
|
| |
We have
been asked many questions asked about wicks, wax & how
we make and ship our candles.
Wax Color
- All our candles are made with pure beeswax which is usually
a golden yellow color with sometimes a golden brown tint.
Highly refined, bleached beeswax may sometimes be white
(or very light in color) but the beeswax that is used by
most beekeepers who produce candles has a golden color from
slight amounts of pollen & propolis (a substance produce
by the honeybees to glue their beehives together) that is
in the wax. click here to continue the article on wick, wax & candlemaking .......

February
in the Honeyfarm
|
| |
This is
the time of the year that we bottle most of our creamed
honey. Creamed honey is made by blending in a small
amount of creamed honey with very fine crystals into a tank
of honey. At cooler temperatures it will granulate quite
quickly into a smooth spread for your biscuits or toast.
We also blend in fruit or spices to some of the honey to
produce our cinnamon creamed & apricot creamed honey.
We do
a lot of repair to beekeeping equipment this time of the
year. One big thing we are continuing with is converting
most of the colony bottom boards to a new "screened"
style. The bottom board is what the beehive colony boxes
(supers) are set on & the honeybees enter through the
bottom board. Cutting a large hole into the bottom board
and covering it with #8 mesh hardware cloth allows the "Varroa
Mite" (which has been killing many honeybees) to fall
through the screen & out onto the ground where they
die.
February
is also the month that we start checking our colonies to
see how they made it through the winter. I check each
hive to see if the bees are alive and then gently lift up
the back of the colony to see how heavy, and full of honey
it is. If it does not have enough honey for the bees to
live on until spring flowers are availble, I will need to
add some honey or sugar to the beehive. If they need feed
I will give them either frames of honey or dry sugar poured
into the inner cover at the top of the colony.
