Greetings Honey, Candles & Grape Enthusiasts!

Direct from the farm!
That is the theme at Honeyflow Farm. In September, if you visit our farm roadside market, you can pick from more than 20 varieties of grapes! You can fill your containers with honey from a 55 gallon barrel! You can purchase candles made from pure beeswax! If you come to our farm & happen to see some guy standing around with a camera talking about bees, grapes, winemaking & candles - this would be me. If you purchase candles or honey from our website you will know that this is not like doing business with an impersonal major retailer.

This is not Walmart - This is a family farm!

Speaking of our family farm members - we have just added a new one. Hannah Grace Perry just joined us on February 04. Since Hannah is only a few weeks old, we probably will not get much work out of her yet. But since Pat & I are very proud of our new grandaughter and since this is OUR NEWSLETTER - oh well - here are pictures ..........

  • How We Got Started!
  •    Many people have asked us over the years how we became interested in grapes and honeybees and what they have to do with each other. Shortly after Pat & I got married (almost 30 years ago) we decided to take a winemaking class at a local school at night. click to continue the story ..........

Tips for Burning Pillars and Other Large Candles
I have recently had some questions regarding burning large pillar candles. Here are some suggestions I have put together.........

  •

We are running a little late this year with our bee yard activities and are still in the process of checking our colonies to see how they made it through the winter. I check each hive to see if the bees are alive and then gently lift up the back of the colony to see how heavy, and full of honey it is. If it does not have enough honey for the bees to live on until spring flowers are availble, I will need to add some honey or sugar to the beehive. If they need feed I will give them either frames of honey or dry sugar poured into the inner cover at the top of the colony.

Most of the colonies that I have checked so far this year are in very good shape & we have had very little winter loss. (about 5% this year so far - last year we lost about 60%)

Due to the warm weather we have had, the bees have been able to leave the hive occasionally and also the cluster inside has been able to move around some. In some years with very cold weather for a long peiod of time it is too cold for the cluster of bees to move inside the hive. They could starve to death with full frames of honey only a few inches away.
