A few notes about our format:

Although our newsletter has a "overview" of every article in the issue, a survey has shown us that we have two distinct and separate interest groups, a grape and winemaking group and a honey and candle group.

Many of the articles in this newsletter have all the text included but sometimes, due to the length, we need to continue the article on a separate page on our website.

We have developed our
"Vineyard Report"
and our
"Candle/Honeyfarm Report"

to conform to the specific interests of our readers
.

Greetings!

Greetings from Honeyflow Farm. Our Bi-Monthly newsletter will keep you up to date on farm activities as they occur.

This annual Holiday issue is also being sent to our friends on the Lapeer County Concert Choir mailing list. Check the Choir section below for info on our Messiah Christmas Concert.

Our Fall Farm
Weekend Market is Closed for the Season

We would like to thank everyone who visited us this season.

Although the U-Pick part of our farm is only open September to Mid October - our website is open all year!

At our Candle Shop you can purchase candles and honey products any time you wish.

In answering questions and in preparing this newsletter our newsletter archive has become a valuable source of material. It may answer many of the questions you have about honey, candles, wine making or about our farm.

In an effort to keep up the quality of our newsletter we are going to publish Bi-Monthly rather than Monthly from now on.

What we have planned for 2005 is a:

"Winter" Issue - for Jan/Feb
"Early Spring" Issue - for March/April
"Spring" Issue - for May/June
"Summer" Issue - for July/August
"Harvest" Issue - for September/October
"Holiday" Issue - for November/December

We also have a new Links Page where you can visit our other Link Partners or you may link your site to ours if you wish.

  • At the Candle Shop
  • In the Candle Shop, Making Hand-Dipped Candles, Bloom

We have been making beeswax candles for more that 20 years. Our hand-dipped style, sold in pairs, are one of the most popular items sold on our site.

Beeswax candles are started by stringing a frame with candle wicking. Each frame starts by holding 6 pairs of candles. The frames are dipped into 175 degrees beeswax, cooled, and then the procedure is repeated. After the candle is about 1/2 size, the frame is split apart into two frames. The dipping procedure is continued until the candle is finished. The pictures on the left sidebar shows this process.

Click here for a new 39 image pictorial showing exactly how we dip these candles.

    Bloom

Bloom is the dusty looking substance that grows on the surface of beeswax candles. It is a naturally occuring substance that appears after they have been aged for a period of time. It is desired by many people as it gives the candle a very "antique" look and only beeswax will develop it. If desired, it may be rubbed off with a soft cloth or removed by the gentle heat of a hair dryer.

At Honeyflow Farm we usually let the bloom grow naturally, except for our Nativity figurines, Chr istmas Tree Ornaments and other Decorativ e Pillars.

These decorative pillars and candles are sprayed with a "candle luster" coating that seals, protects and hardens the surface of the candle to prevent dust and fingerprints and it really brings out any detail on the candle.
To see samples of this candl luster treatment.......

For most of our decorative pillars you have the option of bloom or candle luster when you order them.

How do you get started in winemaking?

The best option is to come to our farm and pick fresh grapes. Here you can mix and match and experiment with over 20 varieties.

If you do not want grape wine try Honey Wine or Mead.

If you missed the grape season and cannot wait until next fall you can always make fruit wines, sometimes called "Country Wines." Try apple cider, strawberry, blueberry, elderberry, there are many to choose from.

Many people also try grape concentrates that are available all year at most winemaking shops.
    Our winemaking resource page.....

If you do not want to do all the messy part of winemaking, there are also wine shops were you can make the wine at their location from concentrates and come back in a few months and bottle it.
Vintners Cellar is one of these options.

We have one of these shops close to us in Lapeer:

The Retail Honey Farm is closed now but the seasons work is notcompletely finished yet.

At the time this article is written we have not finished removing and extracting all of our honey. We like to have this completed by Thanksgiving.

The picture shows beehives that have honey supers on them and hopefully the bees have filled them with honey. The bees will live in the bottom 2 or 3 boxes over winter and any boxes above that with honey in them may be harvested.

  • Our Grandson has Severe Allergies
  • Our grandson, William, was born almost a year ago (last December). When I first saw him, about a month old, he had bad rashes all over his body, and his mother had already taken him to the hospital because of a bad asthma attack.

We foundout that he has severe allergies to all kinds of foods and scents. All of our clothes had to be washed in vinegar and NOTHING WITH AN ARTIFICIAL SCENT, such as fabric softners, soaps, etc could be used if we wanted to be near him.

After experimenting with many products our daughter, Andrea, found that the natural Mellaluca products that use a lot of "tea tree oil" work extremely well in our housholds. We use 100% of these products with natural essential oils rather than harsh detergents.

To make a long story short, Andrea has become a distributor of these household products and if you would like more information please go visit her site:

  • Lapeer County Concert Choir Annual Christmas Concert
  • The Messiah, Handel's most successful and best known oratorio, was composed in the fall of the year 1741 in 24 days. It was first performed at a concert given for charitable purposes at Dublin, Ireland on April 13, 1742 with Handel conducting the performance in person.

This Christmas we are performing the Messiah for the centerpiece of our 37th Christmas season.
