Candle Dipping
at
Honeyflow Farm

Wicks for 6 pairs of candles are on a frame and dipped into hot wax.

The frame is split in half & only 3 pairs are now dipped.

The candles are hanging in a rack to cool between dips.

A few notes about our format:

Although our newsletter has a "overview" of every article in the issue, a survey has shown us that we have two distinct and separate interest groups, a grape and winemaking group and a honey and candle group.

Many of the articles in this newsletter have all the text included but sometimes, due to the length, we need to continue the article on a separate page on our website.

We have developed our
"Vineyard Report"
and our
"Candle/Honeyfarm Report"

to conform to the specific interests of our readers
.

Honeyflow Farm is a Vineyard that grows grapes for home winemakers, a Honey Farm producing honey from Michigan flowers and a Beeswax Candle Shop that produces candles from Michigan beeswax.

More background info on our farm.....

Although the U-Pick part of our farm is only open September to Mid October - our On-Line Website is open all year!

At our Candle Shop you can purchase candles, honey soap and honey products any time you wish.

  • Beeswax Candle FAQ
  • Do you filter your beeswax?

A more natural, unfiltered wax is preferred for our handmade candles at Honeyflow Farm. We use only "straining" (with cheesecloth type material) and "settling" (the wax debris either floats or settles to the bottom of the tank) procedures to clean the wax, leaving clean, raw beeswax for your candles. This procedure will not affect the beeswax smell, color, or texture.

Other candle shops that use automated machinery and are mass producing candles require highly filtered wax that removes many things in the wax - some unwanted - some wanted.

We prefer our more simple and natural procedure.

There were lots of interesting people at the vineyard this year.

I thought I would give you a little sampling of some of the people that visited us this season. People brought us bottles of wine, A Rabbi with a large group of students were here, a vineyard owner from Oklahoma, and the Heng family even brought "Bella the Cat."

Many people made use of our new crusher-stemmer area this year. We hope more people will use this service next year.

All you do is pick your grapes, pay for them up at the sales stand, and then run them through the crusher-stemmer. You must bring your own containers to carry the must home (sorry - no PRESSING facilities available.)

Interesting new site - "Homebrew Exchange"
This site has lots of info for Brewers and Winemakers, a nice forum for winemaking experiences - Go on their site and register.

  • Vineyard FAQ
  • Should I prune my grapevines now that the leaves are all off?

Grape vines may be pruned any time that the leaves are off and the vines are dormant. Many vineyards with huge acres of vines to prune may work all winter, but we prefer to prune in the spring. In the spring, any winter damage that has occurred will be visible and pruning adjustments can be made.

We prune our vines in April when the high school youths are out of school. About 20+ youths work all week and we get the pruning and tying job completed.

Our very busy season in the vineyard during September-October cause us to take most of our honey off later than many beekeepers. Very soon after our Sales Stand closes in mid-october we start to finish our honeybee yards for the year.

  • Honeyfarm FAQ
  • What has caused the massive loss of honeybees in the last few years.

Honeybee colonies are being decimated by varroa mites. Varroa mites are a mite the size of a pin head that grows on the honeybee pupae and causes the honeybees to weaken and die.

  • Our Golden Honey Soap was very popular at the vineyard last month.

Along with our Unscented Golden Honey soap, our Honey Almond Oatmeal, our Lavender (with soothing Lavender essential oils), and our Sweet Muscato, a fragrance popular with winemakers - We have added a Honeycomb Complexion Bar. This is an unscented soap with real comb honey imbedded in the center.
