  • Beeswax Candle FAQ
  • Did you know?

Ancient Egyptians recognized the value of beeswax as a preservative, and early Romans fashioned coins from beeswax to pay their taxes. Invention of the candle dates back to about 400 B.C., but the idea to use beeswax to form candles didn't emerge until the Middle Ages.

  • I would like to introduce one of our new Sponsors, the Richmond Warthogs.

The Richmond Worthogs is a home winemaking/beer brewing club of 20 or so members who meet monthly to discuss homebrew styles, techniques, recipes, activities, and equipment. More importantly, they meet to share their homemade wines and brews. They find that by sampling many wines, and talking with other home winemakers, everyone learns a lot about making really good wine. They have a lot of socializing at each meeting. About 15-20 people attend a typical meeting.

    Winemaking Records

I just moved 4 - 5 gallon carboys of wine from my barn to the basement and got to thinking about the 25 year old winemaking records worksheet that I have been using.

In this new digital age there must be something more recent or useful, mine was printed on an old mimeograph machine by a neighbor many years ago. More .....

    Michigan Wine Making History

    Fast Facts:

    • Michigan has 13,500 acres of vineyards making us the fourth largest grape-growing state.
    • Most of this acreage is devoted to juice grapes such as Concord and Niagara.
    • About 1,500 acres are devoted to wine grapes, making us eighth in wine grape production.

  • Vineyard FAQ
  • Can grapevines survive very cold weather?

Yes - But there are a lot of variables.

Grapevines are rated according to their hardiness. The USDA rates growing areas from 1 to 11 with 1 being the coldest. Most of the vines that we grow have a hardiness rating of from 3 to 6. These kind of vines can survive winters with temperatures below zero, some doing better than others.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEES IN WAR TIME
by Roger Sutherland - SouthEastern Michigan Beekeepers Association

With the war on terrorism and in Iraq fresh in our minds it may be interesting to review how honeybees have been utilized over the years in war situations. Even now scientists are looking for ways to train bees to find mines and explosives.   More .....

  • Honeyfarm FAQ
  • Do the honeybees make honey from pollen?

No! When they visit the flowers, they get pollen all over themselves and pack it into pouches on the sides of their legs, and bring it back to the hive. The pollen is then packed into cells around the brood nest.    More ...

I know "Christmas Lights" has nothing to do with the new year, but it is really fantastic, so I am using it as my "silly ending thing."

Christmas Lights is a magnificent light and music show that was brought to my attention by my daughter. It's a video of someone's Christmas lights that appear to be choreographed to music.
