  • Beeswax Candle FAQ
  • Why do cracks sometimes form on the top of my candles after burning?

Burning a candle for extended periods of time will result in a large pool of melted wax. As beeswax cools, it shrinks slightly which can sometimes cause cracking.

Many times cracks can occur in the wax pool in apothecary & glass candles. Since beeswax is a harder wax and burns at a higher temperature it will tend to shrink and also pull away from the glass container. Most of the cheaper, softer waxes made from petroleum will not do this.

    Winemaker

Adam Kolodziejski picked some grapes for Rose Valley Winery. His winery is in Rose Valley near West Branch, Michigan. Visit his web site at www.rosevalleywinery.net.

    El Wino
A group of retired engineers that were in a fraternity together from Wayne State University picked some foch and came out for a party.
They were having lots of fun - they brought and we tasted a nice Foch wine - very slightly sweetened that was very pleasant. They filtered out the yeast cells which makes it easy to control the residual sugar levels. This group is typical of many of our customers.

One of our grape winners was Laurie Wylin. She won a bushel of grapes in our weekly contest. All you need to be eligible to win is to be on our harvest updates mailing list.

Laurie, in the center, picked her 40 lb of juice grapes and ran them through our grape crusher. She took her crushed grapes home in a 5 gallon pail.

  • Do you recommend oak barrels for winemaking?

Oak barrels can be very useful in winemaking, but they can be problematic and I prefer glass carboys.

  • Honey Harvest 2007

After the vineyard closes in mid-October we will complete our honey harvest. All of the honey is removed from the colonies and we prepare them for winter, such as a fall thymol treatment (yes, thyme - the same as in your kitchen) and some insulation on the top. The honey is taken to our red barn, extracted and put in pails or barrels for storage.

  • What is the National Honey Board?

NHB began in the 1980s when honey producers and other industry representatives got together to discuss a powerful new idea: What would happen if they pooled their resources to spread the word about honey? By working together, the industry could advertise, conduct research and promote honey in ways that were simply too costly without a cooperative effort.  The story.....
