  • Why Beeswax?

Over the Holidays we did a few candle burning tests on paraffin and beeswax candles burning next to each other. Then we made a short Flash Movie Clip showing the difference.

  • Beeswax Candle FAQ
  • Why does my beeswax candle sometimes seem hard to light?

In order for a candle to work properly it needs to pass melted wax through the wick. Beeswax melts at a higher temperature and requires thicker wicks, therefore it is necessary to hold the lighter next to the wick for a longer time than other candles.

  • White Winemaking - The story continues!

Last fall (Holiday 2006 newsletter) we crushed and press several batches of white wine - Seyval, Cayuga, Niagara & St. Pepin. We recently moved them from our barn (to keep them from freezing) to our basement where we bottle honey and make candles. More .....

    Southern Wineries

Last fall we took a trip south and visited 2 wineries, Rosa Fiorelli Winery in Florida and The Georgia Winery in Georgia. Although they had a lot of similarities with northern wineries, they used many of the Muscadine varieties of grapes that grow in warmer areas. Our Northern grapes would not survive in a more tropical climate. The story .....

  • Vineyard FAQ
  • Can I get grapes to make "Ice Wine" at Honeyflow Farm

No - Due to the timing of our harvest season, they are not available.

Ice wines are made from grapes harvested very late, probably in November in our area. The clusters are harvested and pressed half frozen.

  • The Honeybee Colonies in Winter

We do not have a lot of beekeeping activities in the winter. We like to have them all wrapped with plastic and ready for winter.
    Pictures ....

In mid to late February we will check all the colonies to see how they are doing. Sometimes we will feed them at this time to keep them alive.

  • Honeyfarm FAQ
  • What do honeybees do in the winter?

Whenever the air temperature drops below 55 degrees or so, the honeybees start to form a ball shaped cluster inside the beehive. The colder it gets, the "tighter" the cluster is. Even with zero degrees outside the temperature inside the cluster may be 90 degrees.
