New Line of Votives with Essential Oils Coming Soon

Votives Burning

We are in the process of revising our line of votives. At present we offer: Cinnamon, Bayberry, Lilac, Honeysuckle, Rose & Christmas Spruce. All of these use Fragrance Oils as the scent.

In an effort to keep our candles as natural as possible we are in the process of make some changes.

We are going to keep our Cinnamon and Bayberry products made with fragrance oils and replace the Rose, Lilac, Honeysuckle & Christmas Spruce with votives made with essential oils. They may cost more as essential oils cost about 10 times as much as fragrance oils.

What we have planned so far is to try a Lavender and a Pine/Spruce essential oil combination (for Christmas) and some other floral type for a third essential oil votive.

IF YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH ESSENTIAL OILS OR SUGGESTIONS PLEASE CONTACT US - WE WELCOME YOUR INPUT. Some essential oils are way too expensive and not suitable for candle making and we are not sure what our customers would like yet.

What is a fragrance oil?
A fragrance oil is a mix of various chemical components, some natural (from plants or even animals), and some synthetic.

What are essential oils?
An essential oil is a concentrated, hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. They are also known as volatile or ethereal oils, or simply as the "oil of" the plant material from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. An oil is "essential" in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent, or essence, of the plant

Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation. They are used in perfumes, cosmetics and bath products, candles, for flavoring food and drink, and for scenting incense and household cleaning products.

Interest in essential oils has revived in recent decades, with the popularity of aromatherapy, a branch of alternative medicine which claims that the specific aromas carried by essential oils have curative effects. Oils are volatilized or diluted in a carrier oil and used in massage, diffused in the air by a nebulizer or by heating over a candle flame, or burned as incense, for example.

Burn Times of Tea Lites & Votives

Testing Candles We have had questions about burn times of Tea Lites & Votives.

We test all of our candles for length of burn, quality of flame, smokiness and other factors. We do it the simple way by burning them and keeping a lot of notes. The picture shows some tests we recently did on our kitchen table.

We saw some sites that had extremely long burn times on tealite and votives that we did not think was factual.

Usually the burn time is based on two things, the amount of wax and the wick.

There are many different wicks used for candles. We try to find the best ones for a consistent, clean, nice looking flame. If we wanted real long burn times we could use a smaller wick that would have a puny flame - it would burn longer but not be a nice, useful candle. We use pre-made wicks purchased from a major candle making supply warehouse.

Our metal cup tea lites are 5/8 x 1 1/2 inch, weigh .6 oz and usually burn about 3+ hours.

Our clear plastic cup tea lites are 3/4 x 1 1/2 inch, weigh .75 oz and usually burn about 4+ hours.

Our votives are 1 3/4 inch tall x 1 3/4 inch at top & 1 1/2 inch at base, weigh 1.9 oz and usually burn 13 to 15 hours.

Votives must be burned in proper votive holder similar to size of votive. All beeswax should burn the same - the difference being in the wick that is used. We want our votives & tea lites to burn with a nice nice flame. Some sites claim to have a much longer burn time - A very puny flame from a smaller wick will cause longer burn times - but why are you purchasing the candle - for a nice consistent flame or a marathon burn with a weaker flame.

Every candle will burn different - depending on slight variances on the amount of wax that is in it, how the wick is positioned (sometimes a wick at a slight angle may burn stronger and not last quite as long) , the container it is in, drafts when burning, etc.

Candle FAQ:

Untitled Document

What causes a candle to smoke, and what can I do to correct it? Is candle soot harmful?

A well-made candle will create virtually no smoke when burning properly. However, if the wick becomes too long, or an air current disturbs the flame's teardrop shape, small amounts of unburned carbon particles (soot) will escape from the flame as a visible wisp of smoke. Any candle will soot if the flame is disturbed.
