We have finished our season in the vineyard and Pat & I would like to thank everyone who visited us. ![]() We have been winterizing our hives this year with black bubble wrap and wrapping plastic around the whole hive to hold it together. We are hoping for better winter survival - they look pretty good right now. The honeybees do not like drafts, just like people. The eat honey and shiver to keep the cluster warm. It may be 80 degrees or more inside the cluster. ![]() Vineyard - Late Fall 2018The last few days we were open I had some concord and niagara grapes picked, crushed and put into pails. Perfect for winemaking, juice or jelly. $50 each pail. Click here for more info and to order (They are going fast) .... Big news for 2019 - we ordered some new grape plants for the spring. Extra Steuben to replace missing vines. Great grape for wine - jelly or juice. We are trying to keep vines in the vineyard that are not as attractive to birds. Winemaking Activities: I made some St.Pepin white this year. I also made from Foch-Muscat and Foch-Niagara wine. About 5-10 gal each. Ziaulhaq Ahmadi sits on the floor of his small, one-story house, a brown, mud-walled compound at the end of a dusty alley in Aqa Saray. Surrounded by vineyards, fruit trees, and snow-capped mountains, the village is a half hour’s drive north of Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital. With great gentleness, he taps on what looks like a sealed mud bowl until it cracks open.
Ahmadi, 45, reveals a handful of grapes from inside the mud container. They have been there, he explains, since harvest time, nearly five months ago, and kept for Nowruz, the Persian New Year, which is celebrated on the spring equinox. After all these months, his grapes still look perfect, and are perfectly fresh.
A proud smile forms on his wrinkled face. “We use an ancient preservation technique,” he says.
